Should I Go to Counseling?

Does your world feel like it is falling apart most days? With more “once in a lifetime” and “unprecedented” events happening on a daily basis, counseling is definitely a compelling option. As you are navigating through the world lately, you may be asking yourself: “Do I need counseling for anxiety? Should I go to marriage counseling? Can counseling help me?” Maybe counseling has been suggested to you. Maybe you know someone who has tried and benefited from it and you would like to see if you should try counseling as well.

Counseling can be beneficial for a variety of reasons. You can do individual counseling, couples or marriage counseling, and family counseling. Some counselors may also provide specialized counseling for other types of relationships, such as friends, coworkers, and business partners. You may decide to try a mix of individual counseling, couples counseling, and family counseling depending on your needs.

Here are a few possible outcomes of consistent work in counseling…

  • A greater understanding of yourself

  • Better communication skills

  • Stronger relationships

  • A more consistent state of contentment

  • Feeling empowered with the decisions you are making

  • Greater confidence

  • More control over your life

  • The ability to navigate and cope with difficult circumstances

  • Stronger boundaries

  • Higher self esteem

When should you see a counselor?

  • Before, during, and after major life transitions (think: moving, new job or career change, leveling up in relationships, ending of relationships, etc.)

  • You notice you are withdrawing more from family and friends

  • During times of increased stress

  • If things just feel “off” in your life

  • You no longer enjoy things that you used to

  • If you are feeling a lack of control in your decisions

  • You feel like you are struggling to regulate your emotions

  • After a loss

The above lists are not exhaustive. Counseling, its benefits and outcomes, and the process is going to look different for every person. If you are still questioning whether or not you should try counseling, reach out to a few counselors who offer free consultations. Their questions can help you decide whether or not counseling is for you, who feels like the best fit, and what you could expect to gain from the experience.
